Fuel pump

At all versions of Audi 80 engines the fuel pump with the electric drive is installed in the case of a toplivozabornik located below in the fuel tank. He receives electric food via the relay of the fuel pump. It is necessary to mention the shutdown of the rechargeable battery which is contained in the control unit of system of ignition/injection which ensures functioning of the pump only when the engine works.

Shutdown of the rechargeable battery has to prevent ignitions because of the fuel which flowed out as a result of accident or road accident.

Search of malfunctions of the fuel pump

It is so possible to check whether the fuel pump gives fuel: on the place of the socket at the left near a shock-absorber rack (here it is shown on the example of the car with system of injection KE-III-Jetronic) to disconnect the fuel bringing pipeline (2). To put on a hose (1) the bringing pipeline and to lower the free end in some capacity.
3 – fuel drain pipeline;
4 – the ventilating pipeline from the fuel tank to a tank with absorbent carbon.


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. First of all to check a safety lock (the head the Body electrical system).
  2. If it as it should be, it is necessary to look for further:
  3. Sometimes it is possible to establish by listening whether the fuel pump works: to listen under the car at height of the fuel tank whether the fuel pump while the assistant includes ignition turns on.
  4. If the work sound is heard, then the pump is probably serviceable. If nothing was heard, it is necessary to check whether fuel arrives:
  5. Models with the 4-cylinder engine and system of injection Mono-Motronic: to disconnect the tube conducting to the block of preparation of gas mixture in the place of nipple connection. To put on the hose proceeding from the fuel tank, the extender and to lower its end in some capacity.
  6. The assistant has to include a starter at this time. Now fuel has to arrive.
  7. Models with the 4-cylinder engine and system of injection Digifant: to disconnect the bringing pipeline ahead on the distributive pipeline, to put on a hose extender and to lower the free end in some capacity.
  8. The assistant has to include a starter at this time. Now fuel has to arrive.
  9. Models with the 5-cylinder engine and system of injection KE-III-Jetronic: To weaken screw connection on the bringing fuel-supply line – to keep in readiness a rag to remove the following gasoline.
  10. Even at the idle engine a little gasoline because the fuel supply system is under pressure thanks to the fuel accumulator has to act now.
  11. If nothing appears, the assistant has to include a starter.
  12. Now the fuel pump has to begin to give gasoline.
  13. All models: if nothing moves, it is necessary to check the multicontact plug above on a protective flange of the fuel tank and to find out whether power supply receives the pump:
  14. To turn off a rug of a luggage compartment.
  15. To remove a black metal cover.
  16. To remove the multicontact plug.
  17. To check volmetry or a control lamp whether there is between shtekerny contacts 1 and 4 (a brown and greenish-yellow wire) tension approximately in 12 Century. It is necessary for measurement that the assistant included a starter (the transmission lever in neutral situation, the car on the parking brake).
  18. If the pump does not work, despite receipt of food, so it is faulty (to remove and replace).
  19. If food does not arrive, then the pump relay in the central switchboard falls under suspicion. Its check is described in the head "Body electrical system".
  20. Can be other reasons: defective conducting to the relay or the pump, the hammered or bent fuel-supply line hose, the hammered filters of rough cleaning or the fuel accumulator.

Removal of the fuel pump

On the example of this opened fuel tank it is shown how the fuel pump is removed. However the special tool (1) which turns an internal part of the case (a toplivozabornik 2) a little to the left is for this purpose necessary. The tool has to get the paws (arrow) to dredging on an internal part.

For installation of the fuel pump (1) with an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik (2) in an external part (3) it is necessary to observe the correct provision of installation: on the front-wheel Audi models the mark in an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik has to be opposite to a mark in an external part (shooters on the left illustration). On the all-wheel drive Audi model the double mark in an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik has to settle down opposite to a mark in an external part (shooters on the right illustration).

It already belongs to those types of works which the workshop because the fuel pump is taken out together with an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik has to carry out, and it can be taken out from an external part of a toplivozabornik only by means of a special key 3307. The one who can hire a similar key has to act as follows:

  1. To remove the multicontact plug.
  2. To squeeze fixing plates on a tip of the drain pipeline and to remove a hose.
  3. To turn off the giving fuel-supply line.
  4. To turn off a plastic cap nut. As a rule, she sits very densely. Therefore it is necessary to take perhaps more stupid screw-driver, to put it to one of edges of a nut and to weaken a nut easy percussions by the hammer on a screw-driver handle core. If necessary to repeat on other sides.
  5. Now it is possible to raise a protective flange of the fuel tank a little.
  6. On inside of a protective flange (as well as outside) to squeeze fixing plates on a tip of the drain pipeline and to extend a hose down.
  7. To disconnect the plug from the fuel sensor.
  8. To install a special key 3307 on inside of the case of a toplivozabornik and to turn it to the left against the stop.
  9. To take out the fuel pump with an internal part and a protective flange from a tank.
  10. To remember precisely (to note) the provision of installation of the pump, tubes, wires and bandages of wires because at installation all elements have to be collected just in the same look again.
  11. After a detachment of the delivery pipeline (situation at installation) it is possible to disconnect the fuel pump from an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik. It occurs differently depending on version of the pump:
  12. 60-millimeter pump: to turn on the left the grid located below on inside of the case of a toplivozabornik, to take out the fuel pump. At installation the ledge sideways on the pump has to enter a groove. To watch a sealing ring.
  13. 40-millimeter pump: to squeeze a blocking bracket above on an internal part of the case of a toplivozabornik, to take out the pump. At installation the pump can be put only in one situation.
  14. It is necessary to pay attention: at the front-wheel Audi 80 models the mark in outer side has to be opposite to an unary notch (mark) in inside. At all-wheel drive models it has to be opposite to a double notch.
  15. Again to tighten an internal part by means of a key 3307. To establish other details.
  16. The provision of a protective flange at installation: the arrow on a flange has to be opposite to a mark in the fuel tank.
