Check of level of cooling liquid

Shooters in drawings showed the provision of marks a move and min the level of cooling liquid. At the left for 4-and 5-cylinder engines, on the right for the 6-cylinder engine.

Continuous check

Despite existence of the indicator of temperature of the cooling liquid/level of cooling liquid, you should not rely only on it, and from time to time to check liquid level in a broad tank in a motor compartment:

  • Level of cooling liquid can be measured precisely only at the idle engine
  • Liquid level in a transparent broad tank is well visible outside and at the closed cover. At the cold engine level has to be between marks.
  • At the warmed engine level, naturally, rises a little.

Addition of cooling liquid

Noticeable loss of cooling liquid is a sign of malfunction or breakage. Cooling liquid is not spent, and in the closed cooling system it also cannot evaporate. A little cooling liquid it can be squeezed out to a cover only at an engine overheat.

At continuous loss of cooling liquid it is necessary to check the cooling system for tightness according to the scheme described below in this chapter.

If the carving cover of a broad tank has to be opened at the hot engine, danger of a burn is big – therefore it is necessary to work with care:

  • Hand in a glove or by means of a rag slowly to open a cover on one turn and to give to elevated pressure the chance to quit the system. Only after that completely to turn off a cover.
  • If to add only the distilled water, then gradually you will dilute cooling liquid therefore whenever possible at once it is necessary to add a little concentrated nonfreezing liquid – antifreeze.
  • It is not necessary to add above the mark "max" (see the previous section); cooling liquid extends when heating, and surplus evaporates from system.
  • You can add a small amount of liquid in a broad tank both at cold, and at the warmed engine.
  • At considerable loss of liquid and the hot engine it is impossible to add cold water to a broad tank. Because of "cold shock" the head of the block of cylinders can be deformed or burst the block of cylinders.

Cooling liquid

In the cooling system not clear water, but mix from the antifreeze including the additives protecting from freezing and corrosion, and the distilled water circulates. Therefore it is better to speak about cooling liquid or the cooling means. The proportion of mixing makes for the European conditions 2:3, for the northern countries 1:1.

Same important as protection against freezing, is protection against corrosion. It prevents emergence in the cooling system of a scum, rust and other products of corrosion. Therefore the cooling means poured in a workshop with protection against corrosion does not need to be merged in the spring, and it is necessary to leave all the year round in the cooling system. In the workshops Audi own security measure from freezing of "G 11 V8 B" is applied. The manufacturer allows also application of other brands carrying the designation "according to TL VW 774 B".
