Brake system

If something really started moving, then the termination of this movement often appears very complex challenge. Only not at Audi 80: thanks to big brakes on its kinetic energy, naturally, within physical capacities, it is easily possible "to impose a bridle".

Independent repair of the brake system

For such important element as the brake system, there cannot be too much control! So if you glance from time to time whether you all there at you as it should be, then, so carry out a task of servicing of the car better, than the driver who is simply looking after a certain period in a workshop for carrying out servicing. We insistently advise to carry out careful control especially before a long trip (to a holiday) and the more so to owners not of absolutely new car.

On the other hand, repair work over the brake system demands increased feeling of responsibility. Thanks to our chapter about brakes you can even in house conditions control them and repair including the hydraulic drive of the brake system. In similar cases you should solve whether the level of your knowledge is sufficient for the correct performance of these works.

Principle of work of brakes

  • If you press a brake pedal, then the rod connected with a pedal presses two pistons located one by one in the main brake cylinder (located in a motor compartment).
  • Pistons squeeze out the brake fluid which is there. Pressure arising thus is transferred in the brake system on pipelines to wheel cylinders.
  • In them pistons press brake shoes to brake disks.
  • On back wheels of the Audi 80 cars released till October, 1992, the 66 kW, not equipped with the ABS system, brake shoes nestle on the brake drum. Other versions, and also the 66 kW version equipped with the ABS system are behind supplied, as well as in front, disk brake mechanisms.
  • Pressure of liquid appears in two systems of pipelines (contours of the brake drive) independent from each other, namely for one forward wheel and the back wheel located opposite to it (diagonal division of the brake system with the double-circuit drive).
  • If one contour of the brake system fails, then one forward wheel and a back wheel on other party of the car can be still slowed down. With not braking forward wheel still it is possible to drive the car, but not braking back wheel keeps a back part of the car in a track.
  • The parking brake affects back wheels by means of the hummock drive – not very well whether drum or disk brake mechanisms are installed there.
  • In older front-wheel Audi models with 4-or the 5-cylinder engine it was possible to acquire anti-blocking system (ABS) for additional payment. Since January, 1993 ABS enters into serial equipment; all-wheel drive models and versions with the 6-cylinder engine were serially equipped with ABS from the very beginning.  Hint: if one contour of the brake drive fails, then you will need to press much stronger a pedal (at at the same time increased pedal course) to achieve braking. The brake way also becomes longer.
